I have an HP LaserJet 1012 that used to work fine in Windows XP but I can't get to work with my new OS (Windows 7 Beta 64-bit). I downloaded the driver on the HP site and Windows 7 recognized the device by name...but not as a printer. So it wouldn't print. Then I tried uninstalling the drivers and just plugging the printer in on its own--same result. How do I solve this problem?
Many thanks.

Here is a possible solution:
1. Download the printer driver for the HP 1015 Laserjet for Vista X64, and extract the files.
2. Power on the printer, but don’t plug in the USB cable yet.
3. Go to the start button> devices and printers> add a printer> local printer.
4. Select have disk, and browse to the hpc1015w.inf file you just extracted, and click ok.
5. Under installed ports, select LPT.
6. Continue with the install, but don’t print a test page yet, just wait for the installation to finish.
7. Once complete, right click your HP's new icon and select printer properties to change the port to a Dot4 port (if more than one is present, select the highest numbered one), apply and click ok to close the box.
8. Plug in the USB cable and printer something as a test.

Hi. I found this in the HP Support Forum:

I just installed Windows 7 (64bit) retail today on three on my home computers and was suprised my 1012 printer was not supported. Windows 7 saw it as a unspecified device. I was able to resolve this driver issue by having the printer attached to the USB Port, then manually pressing ADD PRINTER, choose DOT4 for the port. For the driver, choose the built in Windows 7 HP Laserjet 3055 PCL5 driver and it will worked like a charm. I also shared the printer on my home network and it worked with other Windows 7 computers not directly attached automatically. This should work for the 1010, 1012 and 1015 as they are fundamentally the same printer, just a different year they were made. The Printers section in the control panel eventually got rid of the Unspecified Device as it now see's it as a 3055 printer. I could care less what Windows 7 calls the printer. I just want it to print. Tested Print Page and Word\Excel Documents with no problems. Hope this helps!

This works! It s the second time I ve successfuly used this workaround for connecting my HP 1012 to laptops with Windows 7. BTW, last week (late September 2015) I automatically installed the same printer on a new iMac with not trouble at all.
Just got a new laptop with Windows 10.
Downloaded the driver package for Windows Vista and extracted the files into a new folder. Searched 'Devices and Printers', selected 'Add a Printer', and eventually got to 'Install Manually'.
Selected 'Have Disk', browsed to the .inf file in the driver folder, and clicked. Selected the DOT4 port. Hooked up the printer and printed a test page. Worked great!
