Im trying to open a file that's 17920 X 17280 on my imac in preview. When ever I view this it takes a little bit to render and than when I got to rotate the program crashes. I also tried using phase one media pro and it freezes up when I try to load this. What is the recomended ammount of ram i should have on hear. I'm running it on a core i3 processor and the file is 1.8GB
Update:I have a PC desktop too but older than the mac. I've been using PC since 1998, even used Windows 3.1. Switched to mac in 2005. Still run windows on bootcamp and use windows 7 for minecraft and everything else. I probabley use 50% Windows, 50% Mac. Want to build my own PC next year when I save up. I am well aware on everything I want to have such as a G-Force GTX 680, two running SLI. Two 8 core intel xeons for processors, 16 GB of ram. A capture card too, thinking of water cooling it also. Mac Pro are great but way too expensive. Macs are just so beitiful espicially there Macbook ZPro's that can run 2 graphics cards now and. If only imac's were upgradeable well anything's possible. Who you calling an apple fan boy? :D Well I am a fan, of thier iphone's ipad's and there software. I could always Hackintosh a windows machine to be able to duel boot apple OS. Cheers!

You Apple fan guys never learn...
You are just to proud to own a shinny Apple branded box for which you overpaid by 600%...
RAM has nothing to do with your problem, although listing how much of it you have will clarify this once and for all. Even 4GB of RAM should be more than plenty for a task like yours.
An iMac is a very basic all-in-one computer, built on a laptop motherboard, with laptop components. Most of them do not even have a dedicated graphics card.
So crashing when you open a very high resolution image like that (17920 X 17280 and 1.8GB size) is to be expected for your low end hardware....
Use Memtest86 to test your Ram if they're okay!!
