I get 360 in.
x (shorter piece) + 2x (the longer piece) = 1080 in.
3x = 1080 in.
x = 360 in. (shorter piece)
2x = 720 in. (longer piece)
Ribbon is 1080 inches long
Formula is: 2x plus x = 1080 inches
therefore 3 x = 1080 inches
x = 1080 divided by 3 = 360 inches
therefore short piece is 360 inches long and
long piece is 2 x 360 = 720 inches long
The shorter piece is 1/3 of 1080 in.
360 inches
360 inches cuz the shorter piece is 1/3 the length of the whole thing and the longer one is 2/3 the length of the whole thing fufilling the requirement for the ribbon lengths to be 1:2.
Divide the total by 3, 360 is the length of the shorter piece;
You find 1/3 of 1,080. The longer piece is double the shorter piece, therefor it is 2/3 of the total length. Thus the remaining piece has to be 1/3 of the total. 1/3 of 1,080 is the same as 1,080 divided by 3, so the answer is 360 inches.
Simple...divide 1080 by 3 (360)
One length is 360, and the other length is twice that, 720.
(x + y = 1080
(2x = y
x + 2x = 1080
3x = 1080
x = 1080 : 3
x = 360
2x = y
2(360) = y
y = 720
Answer: The lenght of the shorter piece is 360 in.
<><
n=the length of the short ribbon
2n=the length of the long one
3n=1080
n=360
one piece is 360 the second is 720
1 piece (x) and the second piece (2x) = 1080 in.
3x = 1080 in.
x = 360 in.
(The longer piece is 720 in. if anyone asks.)
