It appears that explorer.exe has been patched by the virus. Hence, no desktop icon, etc. You'll need to access your system with a PE (preinstalled environment) to get control of the system, replace the corrupt, patched, missing files.
If don't have experience with PE's or know anyone that does, take your computer to a reputable tech shop in your area and have them cleanse the infection. If this infection is removed incorrectly you could end up with a very expensive door stop.
Another option is to use the recovery discs and perform a clean install.
