I must be missing something really simple or really hidden. I'm using Project 2010.
The following link shows an example similar to something I need to do:

I'm up to the fourth step, entering the ACTUAL work completed. I can't figure out how to enter 1000 for the first day. I am in "Resource Usage" view. When I click the cell the value should appear, it won't accept data. Double-clicking opens a "Detail Styles" window. No filters are on. I can enter something via the Assignment Information window, but not for any specific date, just in aggregate for the duration of the project.
Thanks in advance for any help you provide.

The actual work is computed based on the percentage completion of a task. Usually you should enter the percentage completion for a task or the actual work performed on that task. For this you can use the Gantt Chart view or the Task Usage view. Then you will be able to see your data in the Resource Usage view.
And one more thing: make sure the tasks are set to "Automatically scheduled".
