x² - x = 182
x² - x - 182 = 0
(x - 14)(x + 13) = 182
x = 14 is acceptable
x^2 - x = 182
x^2 - x -182 = 0
Then, your going to use the quadratic equation to solve for x ([-b +/- sqrt(b^2- 4ac)]/2a)
a=1, b=-1, c=-182
x will equal both -13 and 14
n² - n = 182
=> n² - n - 182 = 0
so, (n - 14)(n + 13) = 0
i.e. n = 14 or n = -13
checking gives:
(14)² - 14 = 196 - 14 = 182
(-13)² - (-13) = 169 + 13 = 182

let x be the number
x^2 - x = 182
x^2 - x + 182
factorize and you'll find a negative and a positive answer. plug in each value of x and whichever one gives you 182 is the final answer
