When setting up a private network of 5 PCs behind an Internet Router, what IP address ranges have been reserved for such use. Which would you pick, and why?
are the accepted standard networks to use. The most common being 192.168.1.*
Which you use is really unimportant as long as you make note of your routers address. By default most routers are set to either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254
It does not matter which range you would pick, as long as you use the same on all computers. I personally prefer 192.168.1.x as it is very commonly used, but you could use 10.0.0.x just as well for example.

if you enable DHCP service, the IP would automatically be assigned to each device on the LAN.
alternatively, if this is a home network:::
usually the values are
gateway address is 192.168.1.1
subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
which leaves you to assign each device to:
192.168.1.2-254
if you have a office/business the private IPs become 10.0.0.*
