Well it all depends on what console you own or if you own a PC....
But personally ( I own a Xbox 360 and PS1 and a current gen high end PC) its hands down STEAM
Steam is FREE , easy to naivagte and use... Add and chat and manage friends.. A very neat and user friendly game library and download/install system. Also they have a HUGE variety of games from free to play games to games that are expensive and latest games and all these games are TAX FREE! and on steam there is almost a sale everyday... you are bound to find a game of your choice on a ridiculously low price especially during a summer sale or winter sale... you wont believe the amount they drop in prices. you can also use non steam games that are not available on steam. You can add them to your library and still paly them through steam. Steam has its own web browser in game so you dont have to minimize the game anytime. You can chat with friends mid game by hitting a simple SHIFT + TAB and you have access to the web, friends and other game info.
Steam is just brilliant.
Xbox live is a total rip off ... its a subscription system where you have to pay to even stay a member. Games are expensive as always and dont drop down and even if they do nothing close to the discounts you get on steam.
PSN is the same, though its free and no subscription, its got the same deal as the xbox live.
But it boils down to what platform you are playing on, PC or console? If you are deciding to buy between a PC and a console .. I would say hands down PC and Steam...
Steam: Cannot use any store-bought game with Steam and link to other Steam members, all Steam games are bought as software from Steam, however they offer deals constantly and since computers have typing, communication is much more accessible
XBL: Costs, regardless of if you use it, however with all the money Microsoft gets from it, they're able to improve it.
PSN: No cost, however hosts migrate constantly, and because the PS3 doesn't come with a headset, not many players have them and communication is extremely limited
