Last summer I got to go to Alaska, kind of went all over while I was there. Being there, seeing 100s of miles of land that has gone untouched by humans for so long, it was like being on the doorstep to heaven. Even when you fly into Achourage, you fly in over the Ocean and you just stare at this gorgeous mountain range....I don't even think words can fully describe it and I can only pray that someday I get the opportunity to go back.
Well I've been to many beautiful places in North America (San Francisco area, Washington D.C., New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, central and northern Mexico), but the most beautiful place that remains in my memory are the areas leading into Sequoia National Forest near the Sierras in California. Not as well known as Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, or Yellowstone, but definitely, hauntingly beautiful. The sequoias are the oldest trees on earth, and are quite beautiful--there are also a number of other tree varieties also old. I can't forget the beautiful forest of live twisted trunks and branches which was surreal, or the deep river carved canyon with more twisted trunks hanging on the walls. When you go up the mountains and gaze down on the valley dotted with small lakes alongside dry lake beds surrounded by dead volcanos--it kind of reminds one of Mordor in the Lord of the Rings. The oaks and grazing land look more dramatic in the twilight just before sunset. It is a truly beautiful place.
Considering I haven't been to many places, I am going to go with the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee. I moved from the area I was in but about 2 years ago I lived in an area where all I had to do was look at my frontdoor for a breathtaking view of the mountains :)
I would say the black hills of south dakota, or boulder colorado is pretty beutiful too. Anywhere i can get away from the fast pace life of in which i participate everyday, is beutiful to me.
