My family is staying in DC with 4 hotel rooms and in one the marble countertop cracked all the way through in 5 places. My sister did not even lean on it when it happened. The hotel says we will be charged $450 to fix the "vandalism", but I believe there was structural flaws because I weigh 300lbs and sat on my sink and bounced up and down a couple of times without even a creaking sound. What are my rights when it comes to disputing this and having my own engineer assess the damages, and do they have the right to charge the card I used to pay for the room without me having my own assessment completed? Also, is there anything I should do before I leave to protect myself legally besides taking pictures?

You have the right to dispute the charge for the vandalism with your credit card company.
Have your own engineer assess the damage before checking out. You are allowed to have "guests" don't you?
Honestly for my own protection, I always take pictures of hotel rooms I stay in before and after, so I have evidence of no damage, might want to try that from now on, but for now, dispute it and tell them you want a picture with proof of the broken lamp, if they can't pony it up, odds are the maid did it and is blaming you...
