I have two sets of lecture notes ...
one says its : 1+d (a-c) / 2
and the other says its : 1+d (c-a) / 2
a = number of atoms with a valence of 1 (H, F, Cl).
b = number of atoms with a valency of 2 (O, S).
c = number of atoms with a valency of 3 (N, P).
d = number of atoms with a valency of 4 (C, Si).
