Ichthammol does NOT come from fish. It is aluminum bituminosulphate. It is distilled from high sulphur oil shale. It has more in common with coal tar shampoos for scalp conditions. It is supposed to be safe and effective for topical use. It is said to have antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. It is most commonly used for skin eruptions caused by infections such as boils or carbuncles. Along with ichthammol, drawing salve may also contain green soap, petrolatum, beeswax, and other substances. There is antecdotal evidence that drawing salve can help bring splinters and wasp stingers to the surface of the skin. No idea if it would work on glass shrapnel. I used to have two pieces of glass in the ball of my right thumb, also from an auto accident. It took months, but they both worked their way out on their own. Redness followed by a fluid-filled bump that looks like a pimple will be the first indications that it is coming out. I covered it with a bandage and put antibiotic cream on it.
