Thank-you. I did not think of that. I think my cat has hairballs then. I always thought that was from overeating. I sure do learn something new everyday.
I have never known a cat to eat it's own barf but they barf because of hair balls. cats have a special area in their throat, like a gullet where all the hair they lick goes and when it gets too full they barf it up. If there is cat food in that barf maybe they are not discerning. At least they are not wasteful.
For some reason, the cat has an intestinal blockage, usually a hairball. As they clean themselves, the little rasp called a tongue pulls their fur and some of it gets swallowed. Hair is not digestible and gets bound up in the digestive tract. All pet shops and most grocery stores carry petromalt or some other hairball treatment. It is basically petroleum jelly mixed with cod liver oil to give it some flavor. Some cats will lick it right out of the tube and some cats have to have it smeared on their face. They lick it off and the petroleum jelly acts as a laxative so the hairball will pass through to the litter box. That is how you grease a cat.
