I tried to use my external hard drive yesterday, but it wasn't working. Looked online and followed these steps:
- Tried to open drive, got this error : Need to format the disk before you can use it.
- Don't want to format because it will wipe all the data. So clicked Cancel. Got this error : Drive not accessible. Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
- Looked online and ran this from command prompt : chkdsk M: /f /r
- Got this error : Corrupt master file table. Windows will attempt to recover master file table from disk. Windows cannot recover master file table. CHKDSK aborted
Also tried TestDisk with no success.
Please help! I want to fix this problem without losing all the data on the disk.
Thanks

Repairing the master file table (MFT) requires some nitty gritty detailed work by the computer. Some programs do this from within windows (which version you are using by the way?).
Another way to do this is to use some commands from a Linux operating system - these commands have more "low level" control over the hard disk than windows typically allows you to have.
The first link is a discussion about a similar problem, some different programs are talked about, seems a bit hit or miss depending on the damage to your drive.
The second link is a step by step for installing Linux on your windows computer and then using Linux commands to repair the MFT.
A third option is to pay some company to recover the data, just google data recovery hard drive or something.
