No, it usually makes it worse and I think it voids your warranty. Just make sure that nothing's blocking the vent and that there is room for air to circulate and it shouldn't overheat.
Ok heres what to do. First off the intercoller is NOT needed. And dont use the ICE BOWL trick, hmmmm water and electronics DONT MIX.
Now heres what to do when you go to the store assuming you havnt gotten him the 360 as of yet.
Look on the box and there will be a white sticker with some information on it. Look for this information and he will ahve the newest XBOX to be made by microsoft with all the new heatsinks and chips inside it.
Lot 735 or higher
Team FDOU
It's manufacture on or after 8/24/07
power rating from the sticker.. the newest versions say 175W
Using that information you will get the best xbox 360 out there. Other/older models have been known to RROD(red ring of death) Id also suggest getting the extended warrenty from the store. Why you ask. Its simple if anything DOES go wrong he can bring it back to the place you bought it at and get a replacment right then and there, this way he doesnt have to ship it off to Microsoft and wait for about a month.
Also providing a link its a long thread to read but it has the information i provided in it also.
well get one that uses a separate power supply and doesn't plug into the 360's power supply because then you will get the dreaded red ring of DEATH. Just make sure it has its own power supply and stay away from NYKO and you should be fine
edit: my bad i thought you were asking which one to get.
no its not neccessary at all and most of them are really loud and over heat your 360. if you are going to be doing alot of play over xbox live then i would suggest looking into one but you can play for at leasst 3 hours on xbox live without it overheating and if you want to play longer just get some ice in a bowl and put it on top of the 360 (trust me it works)
