My boyfriend has an xbox 360 which red ringed a few months ago, 3 rings. He fixed it with the thermal paste/xclamp removal fix. It worked fine up until today, when it 3 ringed again. We went and added more thermal paste and let it sit, and we never got the chance to see if it works because now there's another problem.. when we turn it on there's an error that pops up, sometimes called e71, and sometimes e79. There is one flashing red ring light. How does one go about fixing this?

E71 is an dashboard update error and E79 is a harddrive error.
If the Xbox is JTAGed or RGHed, then it is a bad solder/wiring causing it.
If the Xbox is stock, it could be a corrupted file or the HDD has been dropped or broken. Try to boot up without the harddrive attached. That should get rid of the 1 red ring, but it will most likely now be back to the three red rings.
Once you get to the three rings again, you need to find out the secondary error code. You get this by waiting until the three reds pop up. Then you push and hold the sync button. While holding that button, push the eject button 4 times, each time taking note of how many segments are lit up. This gives you the 4 digit error code. (4 segments flashing=0 3=3 2=2 1=1) The error will be something like 0002, 0102 or my guess in your case 0010 or 0021.
Retrieve this error code and add it to your question, and I will come back to edit my response in order to help you dial in on your specific problem!
Good luck!

You could possibly best be off purchasing a new Xbox 360. You must try an Elite seeing that they've chips in them made in Japan. They reportedly have much less problems with the RROD. Also they come with 2 games within the bundle from Gamestop. Additionally, Elites are the newest version of the Xbox. If you want extra info on the Elite, simply google it.
