archimedes principle?
You have a glass of water sitting on a scale and the scale records the weight of the water and the container. If you lower a rock on a string into the water what effect will this have on the scale? explain what will happen.
in the previous situation, if the mass of the rock is 50 g and when the rock on the string is lowered into the water the scale reading increases by 20 g, what is the density of the rock?

Well, the second question answers the first-the scales increase. At a guess I'd say it is because the force of buoyancy pushing up on the rock will have an equal and opposite force pushing down onto the scales. That's a total guess though.
