I adopted an 8 month old Malamute just a couple of days ago from someone who could not take care of him. I just realized tonight that one of his nails on his front paw was almost completely torn off. It was only hanging on by a thread, literally. He had not been favoring it at all. It did not bleed. So we gently clipped the remaining bit of the nail off and realized the quick is dried up inside. Mind you it was pretty much his entire nail. We washed it very well. What else can we do to prevent infection? and is this issue with the quick normal?

When the nail is cut back, the quick will recede so I imagine this is what's happened, much as obviously this is extreme. When you take him for the usual initial vet check, get him to look at the situation, and advise.
Use Infection Preventing Products On Him Such As Peroxide and other infection iteams.
