Yes and No, it depends on who you talk to. A few things for sure, you obviously need a source of jellyfish and you need a specific system to hold them, as well as, a regular supply of planktonic food.

The truth is that jellyfish are NOT easy to keep, and only advanced hobbyists should try it !

There are those who feel that public aquariums and academic type people are the only ones capable of maintaining jellyfish. This is true, as they have the resources and the knowledge. On the other hand, there are a few individuals who have, or are, perfecting the systems, foods, as well as, learning how to propagate or raise jellyfish in captivity. Midwater Systems has developed a custom acrylic jellyfish tank, called the Jelliquarium, and is working on holding systems used to keep these midwater collections and gelatinous organisms in suspension.

Until recently the only source for live jellyfish was to collect them yourself or public aquariums. In general, most public aquariums are prohibited from providing or selling them to anyone other than other academic institutions.

Lately though, there have been a few people who have either entered into the market, or have plans to enter that market, and offer various species of jellyfish, systems and food supplies for sale.

Jellyfish As Pets

I just watched a television show about this last night. They wanted to try to create a new anti-venom for a jellyfish that qualifies as the most venomous, deadliest animal in the world, but they were having a difficult time doing so because it is extremely difficult to keep jellyfish alive in captivity. And that is with advance degree scientists, biologists, marine biologists, chemists, etc. in huge, gigantic million gallon tanks. So, I doubt that you would be able to keep jellyfish alive for but maybe a week in a home aquarium.

It is possible to have a jellyfish as a pet although it is very expensive and difficult. Jellyfish can easily die in an improper tank because their tentacles will get tangled if they are not in a tall spherical tank. (which is also very expensive.) Even if jellyfish are hard to keep as pets they are known to be very relaxing and beautiful.

Well sure, if you can provide everything for it. But I don't recommend keeping a jellyfish for a pet. I've taken many aquatic science classes and had everything for a pet, including alligators, iguanas, squirrels...you name it. A jellyfish isn't a pet you can even interact with.

There are lots of species of jelly fish, from tiny to huge. The real problem will be getting any and needing a large, very clean saltwater aquarium - which is a major investment of time and money. Can't recommend it. You might look at the internet and see if anyone has a jellyfish cam - one aimed at a tank of them. In Dallas, there is a very very nice display tank of jelly fish at the World Aquarium downtown. No cam tho.

First, you would have to have a salt-water aquarium. So get that and get it set up (which takes a while). Then you will have to find a jellyfish - I have never seen them for sale, but a search on the internet may yield a source.

I'd love a pet octopus, as they're very intelligent and super-cool.

But I don't have an enormous saltwater tank and another tank for my hypothetical octopus's crab diet.

Can you even catch a jellyfish? I don't think you can because their food source is probably not fish pellets.

That would be so awesome, im not dure though i don't see why not besides the fact that they could sting you to death but other than that I don't see no reason why not to though, I totally agree with you though that would be so awesome to just sitthere and watch 'em i would name mine peanut butter and jelly yum.. gtg i'm going ot go make myself a peanut butter and jelly samish
