Car has no power, speed doesn't match RPM?

I own a 1998 ford explorer sport and one night about a year ago i drove it 2 miles from home, let it sit for about an hour an drove it back home. on the drive back it was a different car. initially it ran like a champ, sped up fast as hell and was a great car. but suddenly it would reach 6,000 rpms but barley increase speed and sound like it was gonna blow up. thinking it was the cats i emptied the cats and cleaned exhaust all that ****, wasn't the problem. my brother whose a mechanic is convinced its a melted or bad air intake valve or gasket, but i refuse to believe this because i literally drove it 2 miles before it went bad. could something be cloggest, or is the exhaust screwed up somewhere else? i can still feel the motor jump like its got a ton of power, the thing wants to go like a bat out of hell but just cant. any advice would be greatful thanks. btw i did all the tuning up all of that nothing changed it.
