I have a 2001 Mercury Cougar and when its hot outside and I have drove for about 45 mins my car loses power and dies. The check engine light is on and is pulling up mass air flow sensor. We cleaned it and it ran good for 2 days and died again yesterday. I am able to pull over and let it sit for about 5 mins and then it starts back up and runs for a little while longer. Help!!! Do I need a new mass air flow sensor or what could be wrong??

Next time it dies..with the ignition turned off, disconnect the MAF sensor harness plug and try running it. If it starts right up you have a bad MAF. You can drive the car for a short while with the MAF disconnected. There is a default program in the computer so you can make it home. Tapping on the MAF sensor with the motor running is also a way to test them. If the motor stumbles or misses when it's tapped on that's another indication of a bad MAF.

Your Mass air bypass sensor calculates how lots air is coming via your air intake, and facilitates the gasoline gadget calculate the air:gasoline ratio on your engine. with out it, your gasoline economic gadget will degrade heavily, and in the adventure that your engine does not have a suited air:gasoline combination interior the cylinders, you need to perform a little severe engine injury, probably even quit the function of your engine, as your air:gasoline combination is what gives you combustion. with out combustion, your engine is purely pile of metallic and plastics. this could not be an high priced restore to alter, and it ought to have broken from mishandling, from placed on and tear - or from somebody mishandling it. Get it replaced, it relatively is a minor subject, yet might reason considerable injury.
It would have helped if you had listed the actual code--there are several for the MAF. Next time it happens, take out the key, unplug the MAF and start it up without the MAF connected. It'll run on default factory programming. If it starts up and runs better than it did right before it dies, chances are good that your MAF is bad.
It's probably loaded up with gunk and you can replace them very reasonably and get better results than cleaning the thing. Also check for an exhaust leak going to the EGR valve, as this will trip the same code and cause the car to die on you every once in awhile.
