I recently got a Blackberry Bold 9700, second hand.
It has BlackBerry Messenger already installed but I can't receive requests and when I send them the other person doesn't receive them.
My girlfriend says that this is because I don't have a BlackBerry SIM card which should have come with my phone. I can't connect to the BlackBerry Internet Service and I suspect this is for the same reason.
Do I need a BlackBerry SIM to use these services?

You need to activate BBM. You can do this at your local phone shop or call your carrier (e.g. T-Mobile)
You don't need a special Blackberry sim card to use BBM and the other Blackberry services. You will need a Blackberry add on, or Blackberry plan, from your network to use the services though. This typically costs £5 per month, but not all networks charge the same price. Your network will be able to advise you as to what it costs, and how to set it up on your 9700. Please note, this is a monthly fee, and not a one off charge. If you want to keep using the Blackberry services, you will need to keep paying for the allowance each month. This is not the same as having an internet allowance - it is a separate charge from that. Even if you have unlimited data, you will still have to buy the Blackberry bundle/add on.
