Yes, I always braided for shows and even though I do not show anymore I will sometimes put my horses mane in a pretty running braid (especially if we are working on something in which it would be helpful for me to see his shoulders and legs as his mane is VERY long!) or just for fun because I like the way it looks :-)
I don't personally show at the moment, but sometimes I'll braid my horse's mane and tail, sometimes to make her look pretty and because it's fun, or to help me get a better look at how her legs and neck are moving, this helps with diagonals for example.

For shows? Sometimes. The horse I'm riding how, his mane it too thin to braid, so he isn't braided.
Tails are kept braided & in wraps between shows.
