(a few hundred dollars, usually) Be sure you really want to use your debit card because the hold could mean that you have no money to spend on your trip because it froze the money in your account you intended to use for spending, etc.
Hotels that take Visa/Mastercard credit cards will take a debit card with the appropriate logo for payment. I can say that so far, every Hampton Inn we have stayed at has taken our debit card.
