they are both good but it really depends on you & your lifestyle.
a dog needs to go out on a regular basis, they enjoy playing and companionship & can get board and with that be destructive.
a cat is litter trained & don't need to go out, they sleep alot during the day, as long as they have toys they'll play by themselves & when the want attention they will come running the moment you come home.
either case you must make sure your home at least twice a day to feed them.
I have both..... 6 cats & 3 dogs (i do prefere cats)
Mainly because cats are not as needy or pack orientated as dogs. Which means that they are much more independent. They are also very good companions when you have only a small amount of space. They are just as loving and loyal as dogs can be, but they are much cuddlier, and fun to play with. You might say that dogs are more protective, well I would disagree. I have had cats before who would attack people for walking into my house without permission.*
I personally prefer a dog because they are loving and affectionate. You can also get a working dog that can actually be used for usefull things like hurding livestock, protection training, weight pulling... A dog will always love you too, if you lock a dog and a cat in a small room for an hour and come back and open it which one is happy to see you?? But dogs are alot of work and people need to make sure they have the time to care for them
The only reason I would see a person owning a stuck up cat is if they dont have the time to commit to owning mans best friend.
I'm a cat person. I think dogs are cute and when I see one I respond the same way I would to a cat "Awww, look how cute! What's his/her name/age?", but I guess there are things about caring for a dog I don't like, such as having to take it outside to go to the bathroom(and cleaning it up, carrying a bag of poop around on a walk) and taking it out to walk/play. I don't like dog slobber (eww). I wouldn't mind having 5 -10 Lb cats sleeping with me, but 1 -50 Lb dog is too much! Hahahaha! Otherwise, they are fine pets for those who prefer them.
I love cats! I have 5 (I couldn't see owning 5 dogs). I love watching them interact with each other and discovering their unique personalities. Yes, some cats are aloof and don't seem to care about their hooman, but others are soooo loving...I'm sure the same could be said about dogs.
I prefer dogs. I have a cat currently but I grew up with dogs. I guess I can't speak for all cats but my cat is the typical stick your nose up only come around when it's her idea type of cat. Dogs will come to you whenever you call. When I would cry, the dog would be right there. Now if I cry, the cat looks at me like "You're an idiot." Don't get me wrong, I like my cat but I prefer dogs.
I love, and have, both, but I do prefer cats. Why? For their beauty, their intelligence, their ferocious autonomy, their sense of humor, their ruthlessness, their predatory expertise, their understanding, their determination, their grace and poise, and their independence. And because they will respect your boundaries, with dignity, once you've managed to convince them that you do have boundaries.
Then again, I love dogs for the simplicity of their world view, their sociability, their loyalty, their enthusiasm, their playfulness, their intelligence, their uncomplicated enjoyment of life, their spirit of cooperation and their train-ability. They are, however, very high maintenance, and prone to getting into things they ought to know better than to mess with. Which is very worrying.
Actually, aside from being an undeniable dog--Viszla/Shepherd mix--our Thorby thinks he is a cat, and frequently tries to convince us that he is the perfect lap-cat. At 50+ pounds, this is far from true, but appears to be an inerradicable conviction. See, he was ten weeks old when we got him, and was raised by our cats, so he doesn't know the difference. Thus, we get a little of each in one adorable package, which is just about perfect.
I very much prefer dogs. They are indeed man's best friend. Dogs are there when you need them. They are used to help the blind, to help the police, to help the elderly, even to help the disabled. Dogs have given their lives for others. They love children, and there is a dog suitable for everyone. You simple can not get a more loving and caring pet than a dog.
The benefits? They are active, they can sleep outside, and they can protect you. Dogs are much, much better than cats, and anyone who has ever owned one will can say that.
I like both alot, but I prefer cats. The reason I like cats a little bit more is because they basically take care of themselves. They use a litter box instead of having to be let outside, they clean themselves & entertain themselves. All you have to do is provide food & water & keep their litter box clean. They are also very funny when they play & can be entertained by even a simple peice of paper balled up. & they can cuddle with you in bed :)

I am not a dog lover even tho I have had dogs in the past. They are too high maintenance for me.
I prefer cats and in particular the Siberian cat. They are dog-like in their loyalty and extremely intelligent...a dog in a cat's body
