I am interested in learning how to reprogram my car's ECU but I have no idea where to start. By reprogramming, I don't mean plugging in a tuner and loading on some preset performance code, I actually want to be able to communicate with the computer in ways that I can see the input the computer is receiving, the choices it's making, and having the ability to alter the decisions it makes (basically making my own tunes).
I've looked around the internet but haven't been able to find anything other than just to use a pre-loaded tuner. Any suggestions for a starting point would be great or even a list of things I may need to do this (hardware and software). Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

Legally you can't do it yourself. You need to get a license to do such a thing and plus you need the proper equipment to do so. And the equipment is not cheap at all. My suggestion, go to a technical school or college that teaches this stuff.

Let me ask the place do you could have the timing set @ now??? I did in actual fact the equal as you have decripbted w/ your IROC in my '91 Silverado Z71(350/A4). Just might be not to the severe you have acknowledged. Then, we set the timing @ 10* improve and it sound good w/ this settin on the timing. However, after I started riding it daily. It began doing the equal as you might have recounted w/ the stublin, surgin and stillin. It turned out we had the timing set way off. I needed to put the base timing again to ZERO w/ the brown wire(placed on the firewall) un-plugged. When I reset the base timing to ZERO. The truck has been strolling nice every for the reason that. Granted, it would quite often use a 'puter up-grade to get alill extra power out of it. However, it is strolling first-rate now. Anyhoo, again to the primary question concernin the 'puter programmin. There is a couple of places that you would be able to go to get the 'puter re-programmed. Wheatley, Nelson or Wait4me are only a few locations. Otherwise you would even try The Ostrich. Which I've herd used to be an excellent product for re-programmin the 'puter.. Simply do not waste your $$$ on any handhelt programmer. Just right good fortune!
You really have to know your stuff to do this AND make the car run right and make more power..
It's not as easy as it sounds.
