I have a laptop but it won't turn off. I've tried everything, but it still won't turn off. I can't unplug it, it's a laptop. I know I could just let it run out of power, but that seems like a long and unnecessary thing to do, especially since my laptop has 14 hours of battery life. I could do it when I'm asleep, but I cannot find a way to keep it on as it turns itself off after a set period of time, and I cannot figure out how to change this. Please help?
Update:I took out the battery, but when I turned it back on, I had the same problem. I guess it does kinda work, but still no the solution I would like... I guess I should just take it to a computer store now

Turn off your PC completely
If you don't plan to use your PC for a while, you might want to turn it off completely. Before turning off your PC, close all open desktop apps—this will prompt you to save your work.
Some PCs have a power button ( Power button ) on the Start screen. If your PC has a power button, tap or click it, and then tap or click Shut down.
Note
The power button won't appear on the Start screen for devices running Windows RT, most tablets that are able to wake up instantly (those that use InstantGo), tablets with screens smaller than 8.5", or if the hardware manufacturer has disabled the button.
If you don't see the power button on the Start screen, here's how to shut down:
Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)
Tap or click Power, and then tap or click Shut down.
Here are some other ways to shut down your PC:
Shut down from the Start button
Shut down PCs with InstantGo
Sleep
This uses very little power, your PC starts up faster, and you’re instantly back to where you left off. You don’t have to worry that you'll lose your work because of your battery draining because Windows automatically saves all your work and turns off the PC if the battery is too low. Use sleep when you’re going to be away from your PC for just a little while – like when you’re taking a coffee break.
For a lot of PCs (especially laptops and tablets), your PC goes to sleep when you close your lid or press the power button. Here's how to check if this is what happens and to change it if it doesn't.
Make your PC sleep
Hibernate
This option was designed for laptops and might not be available for all PCs (PCs with InstantGo don't have the hibernate option). Hibernate uses less power than sleep and when you start up the PC again, you’re back to where you left off (though not as fast as sleep). Use hibernation when you know that you won't use your laptop or tablet for an extended period and won't have an opportunity to charge the battery during that time. First check to see if this option is available on your PC and if it is, turn it on.
First try holding the power button for 5-20 seconds. If that doesn't work then remove the battery from the thing, but be very careful doing this because you may hurt yourself(In which case I am not responsible for your injures). If that does not work then unplug your laptop and run something that will drain your battery quickly like youtube, or a graphically intense game.
It could be in the process of updating the software? sometimes this can take a up to an hour. If you know it is not that, then pressing and holding the power button for 20 seconds SHOULD power it off. if not remove the battery or let it just run out.
hold the power button for a while, but i recommend you check your computer with a PC optimizer because the reason why your computer could not be turned off is probably the result of a program problem. so use the pc cleaner to scan your computer, delete malware and virus and then reboot your PC again.
Put a live disk in the drive and press restart. Or hold start button and then restart with live disk. If shut down is effective using the second operating system then the power button should be ok. Run sfc/scannow at command from the boot disk.
Take advice from a 5yr user what I do is just put the screen down if that doesn't work hold that button on the side it should turn off.
