Giving a shot like vaccines? or insulin would be under the skin. You just pinch the skin like a tent and then you stick in the middle..its hard to explain with out a demonstration. But giving shots under the skin is called subcutaneous.
grab the skin around neck or collar of the dog up away from the neck and inject the needle all the way into the skin then push the medicine in but keeping the dog very still as to not brake the needle in the skin.
You really do need to check with your vet because some injections are given under the skin (subcutaneous) and some are given in muscle (inter-muscular). The type of drug determines the correct delivery method.
have him lay down and rub a cotton ball with rubbing alchol on it's back right below the neck area where the back starts (can't lick themselves there) then pinch the area and in one smooth shot- shoot- then rub firmly and briskly with the palm of your hand and congratulate your dog

If you are suppose to give the dog a shot the vet will instruct you on how to do it. Other than that you shouldn't be giving him one
