Having been diagnosed with depressive-type schizoaffective disorder, depression was a constant thing I fought for many years. Thank God for my medication and my friends - they made it now almost non existent!
When I was depressed, all I could think about was my problems. They grew and grew inside my mind and sometimes I would panic and have to smoke weed to chill out (I believe weed causes you to be in depression when you are not high, if you smoke a lot, btw.). I was bored, tired, and unmotivated constantly. I just felt miserable.
I rarely did anything with other people. One of the best things a depressed person can do is get around others that will love and support them. If you are spending a lot of time alone this is another sign. Sleeping a lot = another sign.
Also, if you seem to be thinking on the same old negative things, I think this is the biggest sign. As a friend I would advise you to call for help, just to talk to a counsellor (Im sure if you hunt for a number you can find a "distress" line and you could ask then what they think, if you should see a doctor or not)

there are different degree's of depression
mild depression, major depression and so on
honestly i don't think that you are depressed because if you are depressed
without a doubt then you will know
but i do think that you might be entering into a depression phase
and you diffidently want to stop that before it becomes a major problem
Right, well, first of, maybe you should tell us your symptoms, so we can actually help you.
If you want to know how you can tell, symptoms are on wikipedia.
You find yourself buying lots of rope.
You don't want to do anything, everything seems boring
