First and foremost you need to make sure that she is getting the exercise that she requires. Either walk her a few times a day, get her to some open area and let her chase a ball, just let her do SOMETHING more! Tire that pup out!

The other thing I have used when training dogs (my mother was a trainer and breeder of Dobermans and Min Pins so I have had a lot of experience!) was to keep the dog on a leash by me at ALL times until they learned their boundaries and how to act in the house. If you are eating dinner, or something where you can't have the leash, then tie her up inside somewhere and make her lay down, give her a very short leash. The rest of the time, you keep her by your side... bathroom, bedroom, living room, EVERYWHERE. In about a month, this usually helps.

You have to remember though, all animals have their own personalities, and she just may be a little more hyper than other dogs. Take that into consideration and enjoy your pup. :)

I have a terrier, and, yes, they are extremely hyperactive by nature. They are little balls of energy. You have to exercise her constantly either by walking or running or playing with her. I walk my terrier almost 7 miles a day and she still has the energy to bounce around. Mine is well trained, and, although she is hyperactive, she never tears up anythng. If your dog is tearing stuff up, you should try getting her professionally trained. Petco and Petsmart both offer pet training classes that give really good advice for a relatively low price. My dog is seven years old and has not grown out of her crazy, bouncy self yet. Depending on the specific breed of your terrier, a second dog may be good for yours; however, a lot of terriers (like my manchester terrier) are extremely territorial and don't take well to new dogs in the "family!" Do some research on the internet to see if your dog would be compatible with another companion before purchasing another puppy.

The exercise and playing with her are good recommendations. If you can find a dog park that is perfect because the dog can run loose and interact with other dogs which usually tends to tire them out.

Another recommendation for those times when you can't get out and play or the dog is overly hyper is "Bachs Rescue Remedy". It is an herbal liquid that can be added to the dogs water. It isn't a sedative or anything but it does help to relax the dog a little. I wouldn't use it all the time, but it may be helpful occassionally. I use to use it for my dog whenever I would go to my parents. There were alot of children around that would make my dog really hyper and anxious to the point she wouldn't sleep or eat. The Bachs Rescue Remedy worked and did not make her sleepy or act doped up, it just helped to calm her.

Take her to a local dog park if you can so she can run and play with other dogs and get out some of that pent up energy. If that is not an option, then make sure you get her plenty of exercise. You should put aside time during the day to play with her - fetch with a ball of soft stuffed animal or better yet get another dog if possible for companionship/play. Work with her to teach her to calm herself down by stroking her and talking softly to her while holding her.

Good Lord No don't hit her! Or raise your voice. It will only frighten her and make it worse.

Check her diet - if she is on a high protein diet and not getting a lot -and I mean a LOT - of exercise, that can make a dog hyper. We have also found talking gently and rubbing our dogs' chests is a great calming method. Above all, behave calmly yourself and speak gently and lovingly at all times. She sounds like a beautiful mix!

Walking helps my two. Also doggy care care even once a week keeps my 16 month old in line. He also likes to play fetch indoors with soft toys to burn energy.
