Go outside your house and find some concrete that is a bit rough and rub it along that spot. Depending on the fabric, it should cause instant tears, snags, and stains.
Rub some dirt on it, maybe a tiny bit of blood. Make it look like its rotting, instead of just shredding it. tear circular holes in it and around the edges of the whole put greenish brown coloring.
take dirt and rub them on to the dress. then put some red food coloring to make them look like blood stains. then maybe burn and rip it up alittle. good luck!
Rub some dirt or brown makeup on it in various spots. If you make any cuts in it, then either wash it or just get it wet and rub the cuts really hard to get the edges to fray

A trick we used in theater is to take a sander (or sandpaper) to the areas that would have wear and tear.
Good spots are places like neckline, hem, elbows, knees etc.
Then get a can of cheap spray paint in a gray or brown, stand about 2 feet away from the item and lightly spray paint the areas you just sanded.
It makes it look worn and dirty.
Hmm... I would rip it rather than scissor it. I would do the tea stain thing also. Maybe some fake blood...

Burn would be good. Just have a bucket of water close. Coffee stains always gave good added looks.
put ketchup on it for blood stains. put some dirt stains on it!
Burn parts of it. And instead of scissors rip it instead.
