my parents agreed that if I could save up for the $500 down payment, that they would make the monthly payments. I have saved up the down payment and I am going to look at a 92 accord tomorrow. It has a new transmission and a newer engine in it. The car lot owner seems very honest and trustworthy, but is a 92 accord a good car in general? the man knows how much I've wanted it and has saved it back for me for the last week (I had to wait for my paycheck).
what are the most common problems, and how is the gas mileage (i drive 30+ miles a day )
btw i'm almost 17 and i'm about to start college so I need a dependable car, I just need to know if this car will be dependable. thanks in advance!!

Well, for one, if you can save up $500, there shouldn't be any payments on it. A 1992 Accord isn't worth more than $1500 in great shape.
In general, Hondas are decent cars. They aren't spectacular like people try to make them out to be, but they aren't awful. I am biased, however, because I hate timing belts, I think it's one of the worst ideas ever, to make such an integral part of the engine in a way that it requires constant maintenance and replacing every 60,000 miles. That, in my opinion, is the epitome of being unreliable. In any other car, if I had to change a head gasket every 60,000 miles (about the same cost as a timing belt), or fuel pump, or alternator, the car would be called a piece of junk. But a timing belt, for some reason, is perfectly acceptable.
With that said, after reading FlagMichael's comments, it sounds like an even worse car than I even gave it credit for, if it can't even use standard coolant, or if you have to remove the axle to change a brake rotor.
Honestly, my suggestion would be, in that case, to find a 91-96 Ford Escort GT then. It uses a dead-reliable Mazda 1.8L. Yeah, it still has that timing belt problem, but for the most part it will last for a very long time and is a very durable drivetrain. It's also a simple car, so there isn't much to go wrong, and things like brakes, etc. are very simple to fix. The only flaw I found was that the starter is under the intake manifold, on the back side of the engine, but that's a minor thing, since my starter lasted about 170,000 miles.
Starting and running problems are the biggest headache, including the favorite (but tolerable) habit of idle hunting. Watch the front brakes - if the rotors are damaged the entire axle has to be taken out to replace the rotors. If you don't know when the timing belt was changed you will have to change it (and replace the water pump). The engine is likely to be destroyed if the timing belt breaks. No conventional green coolant in the Honda - it takes either the dark green or blue Honda coolant, although amber Prestone "universal" is acceptable. Conventional greeen will chew up the water pump. The cooling system must be bled every time it is drained and refilled to prevent idle hunting.
See the first source for more on the big three causes of starting and running problems - "main" relay, ignition switch and igniter.
My Mom purchased a Black, 1993 Honda Accord Brand New. She had it for 1 year, then gave it to my Grandma. My Grandma, to this day, still drives that car.. the sunroof still works.. the engine runs properly.. they are wonderful cars. Go for it. They were one of the most POPULAR Accords ever manufactured by Honda. The gas mileage for this car is awesome, she has people constantly asking to BUY this car. It looks really great. Very dependable! The reason my Mom gave it to my Grandmother was because she switched to a Mercedes-Benz. I have drove it around our neighborhood when she visits, and the handling of the vehicle is superb. It is a great all around car, and I strongly recommend this brand.
most hondas do run forever, but dad had one of these brand new at the time even though i was two i remember yelling about the transmission in it constantly.
they'll run forever.
