I always thought the word for someone who hated gays was a heterosexist but Google says homophobia is a word. That doesn't make sense to me though since that literally means "fear of humans." I'm not looking for a political debate on it, I'm just wondering if it's a real word. Thanks.

Sure, it's a real word. It is spoken and written and has a commonly understood meaning, ergo it is a real word.
Next window please.
EDIT: But I do wonder what word would someone use if they were afraid of sameness. "homo" means same and "phobos" means fear but homophobia is taken to mean "fear of homosexuals". What about fear of humans sapiophobia? But sapience is also wisdom, so how would you say fear of wisdom?
And what if I'm afraid of change but I'm...
...eh...I'll ask my own question
If somebody ever manages to describe to my delight how employing the word "actual" completely for the two set of mothers and fathers advances effective, on a similar time respectful communicate approximately adoption, my answer will exchange into "No." provided that that has yet to ensue, I trust you, Mei-Ling, and say "confident." i think that adoptees have 2 gadgets of mothers and fathers, who've a actual functionality interior the youngster's existence. in case you compromise with that, employing the label of "actual" for the two is redundant and would not upload to the communique. in case you do no longer, then you definately ought to severely evaluate why you are able to in basic terms validate your man or woman functionality (or the functionality of one set of your mothers and fathers) via invalidating yet somebody else's. know is a 2-way highway. in case you desire to get it, you should be arranged to grant it-- and a man or woman saying that they must be respected yet have no criminal duty to grasp others is in simple terms hypocritical, and makes it confusing to be considerate to them. Labeling one set of mothers and fathers as "actual"-- in spite of whether you think approximately the "actual" mothers and fathers to be people who created the youngster or people who raised the youngster-- to the exclusion of the different does no longer something yet alienate. If a man or woman parent would not care approximately the different set of mothers and fathers, great. yet whilst that distinctive loves an adoptee, i won't be able to think of why a man or woman could sense they had the properly suited to invalidate the adoptee's thoughts approximately one set of their mothers and fathers, after being advised that it particularly is hurtful.
It's a dumb word, made up by dumb people (who didn't know that "phobia" means fear, not hatred), in the dumbest decade of the century, in the dumbest part of the world, to denote the hatred that dumb-dumbs feel towards those effeminate retards that they stupidly and mistakenly identify with male homosexuals. But if Google says it's a word, it's a word. As a close to a definition of homophobia as anyone will ever get would probably be "Hatred of girly-boys (thought to be homosexual)." Even so, as misappropriated by trannies, the sister-term "transphobia" means (so say the mis-gendered) "Fear of Transsexuals." "Fear," that is, as you suggest--although "fear of humans" would be anthropophobia, not homophobia.
@?: You've made a hilarious, tangled mess of Greek and Latin roots--but to answer your question, "Fear of Wisdom" (in Greek) would be Sophiaphobia.
Most people defend terms as being word that are in line with their own opinions. Homophobia is not a real word, it is a slang derogatory term meant to discredit those with an opposing opinions. It is a politically charged term that is brought up for a purpose. If your opinions don't align, don't use it. Combat enemy propaganda the only way you can, don't use their terms.
Homo means first, one, or same (humans are called "homo sapiens" because it means "first intellegent" and "homosexual" means "attraction to the same sex")
Phobia means an irrational fear, dislike, avoidance, or hatred
Heterosexual actually means attraction to the opposite sex (i.e straight), so heterosexist would mean you dislike straight people
YES! c: Me and my friends searched it on the school's dictionary ounces. It means "the fear of homo" or something like that :P
"Phobia" in English also means "a severe dislike of something". (Words can mean something quite different when imported. "Night" in Italian means "nightclub", not "notte".)
It is made up just like the rest of them.
yes it's a real word
