Hi, I'm a 16 year old boy, and I have recently started putting maca root powder on my cereal and my yogurt because I enjoy the taste. However, apparently some people use it to regulate hormones, which has me wondering if eating maca root is okay for a teenager.
Would maca root have any bad effects on my hormones, or any effect at all? Is it safe to consume maca root at my age?

It is 'believed' and therefore used to increase testosterone production which could benefit you depending on if you need it. However, this would be more problematic for women as they could display secondary male characteristics such as growth of facial hair and deepening of the voice. Obviously being a male, this would not be as great of a problem for you and if you take the Maca Root in small doses, it could provide other benefits including increased libido and improved immune function. Keep in mind that other side effects on hormonal activity can lead to skin problems such as acne breakouts and for women, menstrual problems. It also has a high content of iodine, so make sure you do not have a overactive thyroid which can otherwise worsen symptoms. As for your age, it is best to not consume large amounts of it since you are still in the stage where your hormonal levels in puberty are still altering significantly. If you really enjoy the taste and seem to be responding well, take a typical recommended cycle where you take it for 2 weeks, then stop taking it for 2-3 days. Take it cautiously, never exceeding the recommended dose and finally, talk to a person in the field of Alternative Medicine or other health professional who has sufficient knowledge and able to perform a personal assessment of your health and whether or not you require such a product.
