Clara is currently mine and my husband's top pick for a girls' name. We are considering several potential middle names, but I don't feel completely satisfied with any of them, so I'd love to get your input.
We strongly feel that we want to honor family members with our choice of middle names: top contenders for our first child would be my mother (Joyce Elizabeth) and his mother (Ruth Anne). I also feel some need to pass on a form of my middle name (Joy) since it has been worn in some form (either Joyce or Joy) by three generations.
Here are the ideas we have so far:
-- Clara Joy
-- Clara Joyce
-- Clara Anneliese (honors both grandmas; combination of Anne and Elizabeth)
-- Clara Josephine (repeats the "Jo" found in Joyce and Joy)
-- Clara Elspeth (a version of Elizabeth)
-- Clara Marianne (incorporates Anne)
We might consider using two middles, with combos like:
-- Clara Anneliese Joy
-- Clara Joy Anneliese
-- Clara Josephine Anne
-- Clara Josephine Ruth
Do you have a favorite from our list or any ideas for other middle names? Thanks!
Update:Clara Bethany is a good suggestion... let's put that one on the table, too.

I like Clara Joy, Clara Anneliese, Clara Elspeth, Clara Marianne, and Clara Anneliese Joy. Clara Bethany is sweet, but it doesn't seem to go well with your other favorite names. It's too ordinary.
Have you considered Joanna, Johanna or Joanne? They incorporate the "jo" parts of Joyce/Joy and also Anne.
Other ideas :
Isabelle / Isabella (variants of Elizabeth)
Annabelle (incorporates Anne and Belle sounds similar to Beth)
Annabeth (a legitimate name smoosh, I'm not too fond of it, it's okay)
Lillian (Behind The Name said it was probably a diminutive of Elizabeth, but it's a bit of a stretch. It does incorporate part of Anne )
Lilianne / Liliane
Lisanne (Dutch, a combination of Lisa and Anne. Lisa is a diminutive of Elizabeth, I'm don't really like this one)
Clara Isabelle Ruth
Clara Isabelle Anne
Clara Isabelle Joy / Clara Isabelle Joyce
Clara Annabelle Ruth
Clara Annabelle Joy / Clara Annabelle Joyce
Clara Johanna Elspeth
Clara Elspeth Johanna
Clara Elspeth Joy
Clara Johanna Ruth
As for the pronunciation of Anneliese: If Anneliese is the only middle name, then I think either pronunciation sounds fine, but I slightly prefer the German pronunciation. If there are two middle names, then I would definitely pronounce it the German way. It sounds less choppy that way and so much better to my ears. You could also kind of smush the two pronunciations together: "ann-uh-LEEZ-uh". The Anne sound is at the beginning rather than the "ah" sound.
Anyways, Clara Anneliese Joy Grey is the clear winner for me (when Anneliese is pronounced the German way) It's gorgeous!
:)

For those who like Anneliese, do you prefer it pronounced ANN-uh-lees (the English way) or ah-nuh-LEE-zuh (the German way)?: Its pretty both ways, but I prefer the English way
-- Clara Bethany- 8/10 Cute.
-- Clara Anneliese Joy- 9/10 This ones really pretty

-- Clara Josephine Anne- 8/10 This ones actually pretty

-- Clara Joyce- 7/10 Joy was better
-- Clara Anneliese (honors both grandmas; combination of Anne and Elizabeth)- 9/10 Beautiful
-- Clara Josephine (repeats the "Jo" found in Joyce and Joy)- 8/10 Old fashioned but very cute
-- Clara Elspeth (a version of Elizabeth)- O_O....-doesnt like it, sorry-
-- Clara Marianne (incorporates Anne)- 8/10 It actualyl flows ok.
I would go with Clara Annelise Joy. I think its perfect. And my favorite from your list ^^
Good luck :)
I love the name Clara. My name is simply Claire, which is fine with me, but I've always thought Clara would've been really sweet. A little girl about six-years-old lives next door to me and her name is Clara, and she's absolutely precious.
My favorites on your list is Clara Joy and Clara Anneliese (I pronounce it ANN-uh-lees). I think both sound wonderful. I would suggest from the names you have there Clara Ruth. I think that's adorable, and you could use the names from your side on your next daughter (or, if a boy, maybe Joseph or Elijah would be nice male forms of your family's names.)
Some suggestions:
Clara Joyce Anne.
Clara Joy Beth.
Clara Annabell.
Clara Jo Anne.
Clara Beth.
Clara Elizabeth Ruth. (that one may be too much of a mouthfull...)
Some other names:
Clara Louise.
Clara Noelle.
Clara Margaret.
Clara Evelyn.
Clara Catherine.
Clara Lorraine.
Clara Madelyn.
Clara Lillian.
Also, you may want to think if either of your fathers' names could work. For instance, my first name is Loni Claire, and I'm named after my greatgrandfather Lonnie. This may not be an option for you, (like, if your fathers' names are James and Mark, haha) But, it's just a suggestion.(:
Good luck!
-- Clara Joy: I usually hate the name Joy, but it's been growing on me as a middle name just because it does have a lovely meaning. I like it better as you have it listed further down though, as a second middle name. 6/10
-- Clara Joyce: I'm not sure about this one, although "Joyce" is only one syllable it sounds potentially trendy and awkward, like a lengthened Joy and a shortened Jocelyn. 5/10
-- Clara Anneliese: My favorite combination. It flows nicely, and I love Anneliese. I also love that you are incorporating your grandmothers' name. Anneliese Claire was on my list for a while, this is a very similar name. I prefer the German way ah-nuh-LEE-zuh. 10/10
-- Clara Josephine: I normally dislike the name Josephine, but it's very nice here. I also like Clara Jacqueline, although it doesn't incorporate the "jo". 9/10
-- Clara Elspeth: Not sure how I feel about this one. Elspeth is nice, and it incorporates Elizabeth, but...I don't know. A little too much again? 6/10
-- Clara Marianne: Love Marianne, dislike the combo. I'd prefer Clara Joanne, which incorporates both names. 6/10
Three name combos, best to worst w/ ratings!
-- Clara Anneliese Joy: 10/10
-- Clara Joy Anneliese: 10/10
-- Clara Josephine Anne: 8/10
-- Clara Josephine Ruth: 6/10
And suggestions:
-- Clara Joanne (Anne and Jo)
-- Clara Anne Marie (Anne)
-- Anna Clara (or vice-versa)
-- Clara Joy Elizabeth
-- Clara Elizabeth Audrey
-- Clara Eliza
-- Clara Eliza Joy
-- Clara Eliza Katherine
-- Clara Annalee
-- Clara Joy Annalee
ETA: Clara Bethany Joy is pretty. =)
ETA2: I also like Clara Naomi Ruth, and Clara Bethany Ruth.
My favorites are Clara Anneliese and Clara Josephine. I'm leaning a bit more towards Clara Josephine because I of the alliteration of the As in Clara Anneliese; plus Clara Jo is a really cute nickname.
Anneliese I would, of course, pronounce the German way: "ah ne LEE zeh." For the pronunciation "an neh LEEZ," I would go with the more French Annelise.
Don't feel TOO pressured to honor everyone with one name set. Remember, you'll probably have more children on whom you can use your names. :)
P.S. I really like the suggestion Clara Bethany too... Bethany, though not related linguistically, is an interesting way to incorporate "Elizabeth" and "Anne" together. Perhaps Clara Beth as a nickname?
Clara Madeleine
I like Clara Anneliese Joy,very pretty name.=)
Clara Celeste
Clara JoBeth
Clara Blythe
First of all, Clara is beautiful! What a great choice. :]
Now, I LOVE Clara Elspeth, Clara Anneliese & Clara Josephine Ruth!
A few other ideas...
Clara Isabel / Clara Isabella [Honors Elizabeth]
Clara Isabel Ruth
Clara Bethany [Honors both Elizabeth & Anne]
Clara Annabel Elise [Anne & Elizabeth]
Clara Josephine Isabel
Also, maybe you could use a name that means "joy" instead? For example...
Clara Felicity
Clara Abigail
Clara Gwyneth
Good luck!
I like Clara Joy, and Clara Elspeth.
I also think these would be cute:
Clara Grace
Clara Kate
Clara Kathryn
Clara Reese
Clara Paige
Good Luck! :)
