Ok so my mom has told me this before lots of times and my now deceased grandfather did too when he was alive. Ok so they always would tell me (keep in mind this was in the middle to late 60s to the middle to late 70s) but they would always tell me stories about "jack o lanterns" I dont know if thats the real name for these things or not but anyway the stories would go like they would go walking pappaw walking my momma on her bike and it would start to get dusky sun was setting and every so often they would see what my pappae called "jack o lanterns" they would be about as big as a basketball and glowed like a bright almost fluorescent orangeish yellowish color and these "jack o lanterns" would float sometimes closer to the ground and maybe sometimes about chest or eye level and they would just sort of float across the road or float across some grass and then just disappear. Now keep in mind that my pappaw and my mother always would and momma still swears up and down that it really is true and that it really did happen more than once. Does anyone know what this is or ever seen this? Can someone explain this to me if they know what it is?

No, not paranormal, there's no mystery here. You're describing Chinese lanterns. These are small envelopes of tissue paper filled with hot air from a candle, essentially a miniature hot air balloon. Even if they're not colored, they have an orange glow because of the color of the flame. These are fairly common as party favors, and can be bought by the dozen or hundreds. They account for a fair number of UFO reports, but there's nothing paranormal about them.
