At my 12 week ultrasound last week my dr. informed me that I have complete Placenta Previa (where the placenta completely covers the cervix) She told me I couldn't have sex, but I thought there's supposed to be a mucus plug that protects everything.
Am I wrong, or if not when does the mucus plug form?

I cannot emphasize this enough: you CANNOT have sex if you are a complete previa. Some previas correct themselves, but others do not. Placenta previa can be a very dangerous condition, and you need to do exactly what your doctor says, as difficult as that may be. Having sex will cause a rupture in the placenta that could cause internal bleeding and put the life of you and your baby at risk.
It is true that there are many people out there that simply need bedrest and never have complication and they deliver a completely healthy baby. Unfortunately, I was not one of those.
I had a complete previa with my last pregnancy (I didn't have a single risk factor for it), and it never corrected itself. I had my first bleed at 17 weeks, followed by two more massive hemhorrages that I nearly died from. I followed my doctor's bed rest order to the letter, and it still happened. I ended up on complete bed rest for 4 months (some of it in the hospital) and had another massive hemhorrage when my baby was 32 weeks. Since it was the fourth hemhorrage, they decided my body couldn't handle any more, and it was time to deliver via C-section. My baby is okay now, but he was in the hospital for a month.
I am not telling you this to scare you, but it's important to know what you're up against. I hope you're in the majority, because most women are fine. But there is always a possibility that you're not. Please get all the information you can about Placenta Previa. Webmd is a good place to start. This is a condition that too many women take lightly, but it is extremely serious.
Placenta Previa is when the placenta is located at the bottom of the uterus, therefore can be expelled.and WILL be expelled before the baby in a natural delivery. It can change over time, however, by having sex u can cause damage to the placenta-meaning you are restrciting, or can start to restrict what kind of nutrients your baby is getting. The mucous plug has nothing to do with it, and does NOT protect it. This is how some people lose their plug through having sex. PLEASE DO NOT HAVE SEX!!xxx
I don't know much about Placenta Previa but if the dr. is telling that you should have sex then you shouldn't. And I don't know about the whole mucus plug thing either.
i know from all the reading i did when i was pregnant that women with placenta previa are not supposed to have sex. the mucus plug has nothing to do with it. but, hey, it's just regular old intercourse you can't have...not all sex. but definitely listen to the doc on this. also, a lot of women with placenta previa end up with a placenta that moves later and resolves itself, so this may not be for your whole pregnancy. be careful for now.
I just found out the exact same thing..It sucks, luckily it can move as your uterus gets larger..hopefully this will happen for the both of us! Good luck!
