I have a project where I have to create a custom solar system that requires:
2-3 planets
source of energy
Aside from the requirements, there are no other limitations.
Does anyone have some creative ideas for the planets, stars, how they interact, etc. ?

I would suggest a single star at the center of the system. Double star systems make planetary orbits unstable. I would suggest a main sequence yellow star, as they are the most suited for planetary development and life. May I suggest a rocky planet, and ice world, and a Jovian world (a large gas giant). The rocky planet in the so-called Goldilocks zone, where life is most suited to develop. Have its makeup similar to Earth or Mars, with a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere, etc. The ice-world is a little outside the goldilocks zone, however it is very geologically active and underneath the surface huge volcanic plumes heat water and allow subsurface life such as bacteria and plants. On the final world, no life is able to develop, it is far outside the goldilocks zone, however its large size helps to protect the other two worlds from meteor impact, and its large gravitational pull helps keep the ice world geologically active. May I also suggest that the ice world's surface is also suited to silicon based lifeforms, who are able to survive by using ice for water, and have large flat bodies which collect whatever heat they can from the parent star.
