How (Be specific) do you toss a tennis ball into the air before you start out a serve? And how do you keep it consistent (keep it in the same spot all the time)?
A lot of problems come because players use their wrist - this can result in jerky movements and inconsistent tosses. Hold the ball with your fingers (not the palm), lock the wrist and just extend your arm up and let the ball naturally release, instead of throwing it.
Also, if you have notoriously have bad tosses, practice your tosses before actually practicing serves (players often underestimate this). Practice tossing it so that it returns to your hands again.
The perfect toss is about the height of your full extension plus just a little more. When you start learning spin serves, you may toss it slightly to the left or right, but it's important to have a consistent toss first.
start with your left foot pointing in the direction you want the ball to go. the racket and ball out in front of you. bring both down and then up in one smooth swinging motion. the racket then go's into a back scratch position and your knee's bend and the ball is tossed up.to add to the other guy. also keep the ball on your fingers and not the palm of your hand when tossing. it help avoid spin on the ball. then extend up and out through the ball. keep your eye on the ball all the way through contact. and don't drop either shoulder.
on a windy day your toss should be a little lower to avoid movement of the ball.
when hitting a flat serve...the racket face should flatten out about the time of contact.
when hitting a top-spin serve...you come up and over and out on the ball.
i know more too. if any other questions just email me at [email protected]
The other tips are good advice. What I will add is that when you hold the ball in your fingers (like an egg) your palm should be facing sideways, NOT straight up. Lift the ball up and let it go. When you release the ball it will come out in the 'C' of your index finger and thumb. As for height of the toss, reach up and fully extend your racket your racket and you will see where you want the ball to be at contact.
Okay when you toss it, if you can't catch it without moving or extending or retracting your arm it's wrong. Practice tossing it whenever you can so when you do serve it's right there and consistant. Also before you serve make sure you do a few practice swings to make sure your serving correctly.
