I am looking for a (free) way to transfer data from a laptop to a desktop. My desktop does not recognise that my laptop is connected to my router and I do not own cross over cables. I have a modem in each one but am not aware if that will work to transfer data (and even if I could it would take days to transfer all the data) I can connect both to the internet. I also can burn cd's and dvd's from both. Any suggestions?

Use msn messenger!
Install msn on both computers, and login with different accounts in each. Then just send the files over from one computer to the other.
If they are both connected to the router and can both get out to the internet, your problem may be quite simple.
Right click on "my computer" and select "properties".
Select the "computer name" tab.
Use the "change" button to give each one a different name and to give each one the same workgroup name.
Re-start the machines and you should be able to see one from another.
do you have wireless capabilities in both?
