What components is it connected to and can a compressor leak?
Update:The compressor that was replaced took out my serpentine belt as well...I mean completely ripped it to shreds. (I have a 12 y/o Volvo turbowagon and limited access to qualified mechanics.)

There is a high-pressure side, and a low pressure side to all AC systems. An Air Conditioning compressor pressurizes the freon in your AC system. When gases are compressed, they get hot because the molecules are closer together. That's why the next place the Freon goes is a radiator-like device in front of the Anti-Freeze radiator, to cool the Freon back down to outside air temperature. Then after that, the Freon goes through a fixed orifice into the low pressure side. As the Freon expands, the temperature goes down further (below air temp, molecules again). Then it goes through a part similar to a Heater Core, where air is passed over the tubes the Freon is in, to cool the air off before it comes out your AC ducts. Then the Freon goes back to the pump, where the whole process starts all over again.
Compressors can leak, although it's more common for the hoses between these various parts to leak.

What exactly does a car's compressor do?

I'm betting your referring to the A/C compressor and yes they can leak, usually at the front shaft seal area and it's best just to replace the compressor.
There are two types of compressors. One is actually a turbo charger. The other is for your air conditioning. If either one of these leak it can be a bad sign. Have a reliable mechanic look at your specific compressor and give you an idea of the problem, cost and time to repair it.
can a car run with out air compressor?
that is your ac compressor it can leak and you wont have cool air
depends on the car most fullsize cares have a/c that is the compressor&some have air ride that is another
