Like the others are mentioning, it depends on how you intend to use it what will be best. The larger the storage tank, the less often it will have to run and the more you can do with it. You might want what's called a two stage compressor, they're normally easy to tell, it has two compression cylinders, one larger one and one small one. This allows it to build higher pressures faster. The oiled ones as mentioned below are quieter. You might want a 220 volt version, or maybe you only need a small one ten size. I couldn't begin to tell you without much more info. I can tell you this much, if you use the big ones that aren't portable, you'll also want to install lines around the garage to give you the best use of it. You might even want to put it in a shed in back of the garage to keep the noise at bay. Invest in the better quality lines, and good quality, heavy duty hoses if you're going to use it a lot, especially with air tools. Air tools require a lot of highly compressed air to be effective.
I have a small wood hobby shop. I make Crosses, bird houses, ect for Hospice families, or families who have lost a child. I don't charge for any of the things I make. I don't have a lot of money. I bought an air compressor from Harbor Freight ( China) about 15 years ago. It still works great. I paid about 125.00 for it. I use it every day. Nail guns, spray paint, ect.
depends on what your uses will be if only to inflate tires on car or bikes then look for a little compressor like a pancake they will run a brad Nail gun easily if you want it for Air tools then you need to spend a little bit of money.Best of luck
