I'm guessing testimonials are when you get up in front and talk about how Jesus appeared in your life? I've never done it so I wouldn't know.
I mean, they tend to be just a little bit too excited about anything to do with the religion. I think testimonials are a way they get even more excited because its almost a way for them to say "look, I have proof! Listen to THIS!". In court, a person's testimonial usually has the power to influence the judge or the jury if they aren't discounted for some reason, so Evangelicals tend to probably use this logic within religious testimonials!
Testimonies are praise for the goodness and blessings that can only come from God. I praise Him for helping me find a new home when it seemed that I would be living on the streets after losing my home and my car after the old one broke down and was too expensive to repair. God is my Jehovah-Jireh, my Provider. Everything that is good comes from God. Some Christians have the ability to speak without fear and then there are others who are intimidated by speaking in public, it is not a matter of being an extrovert but of having a testimony to share and encourage others in their walk with God.
Psalm 150:6 --- Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD
They go gaga because someone else professing to believe as they do reinforces their belief and lending the belief credibility due to multiple believers...
The same concept applies to children..
Child one says "I believe in Santa."
Child two says "So do I."
Both child one and child two have reinforced their belief on Santa by having someone else profess the same belief both children believing lends credibility to each child's belief... .
When you suffer from schizoid delusional mental disorder or schizophrenia, it makes you feel good when you see someone sharing the same delusions dear.

It's largely a group thing.
And for many it's a rite of passage.
Though for some reason they aren't so keen on personal testimonies that have come to different conclusions than the "proper" line.
But if one testimony is powerful witness and beyond challenge, so is any other. Be it Buddhist, Hindu...

They love to hear the same thing over and over, it's similar to why a child can watch the same video over and over, they just love happy endings.
If you take the time, each testimonial says the same thing, just packaged slightly differently.
