There are a few reasons why we might bruise more easily as we age.
Skin becomes thinner and the protective layer loses fat and connective tissue. So, the blood vessels in our skin are not protected as well as when we were younger. Skin heals more slowly as we age too. Some of the changes just happen as we age; but sun damage can make the damage happen more quickly, and at a younger age.
Some medications can cause skin to bruise more easily; blood thinners and aspirin are two common causes for bruising skin. Other medicines can also make the skin bruise more easily-if you are taking any medicines then I suggest you mention the bruising to your doctor. Sometimes, the dosage needs to be changed.
There are some diseases that cause bruising too. If the bruising is new or seems to be getting worse, then mention it to your doctor.
If the bruises are caused by medicine or an underlying disease, then adjusting the medicine dosage or treating the disease should lessen bruising. Otherwise, there really isn't a cure for bruises, just some simple treatments you can try.
Use cool compresses or ice packs during the first day or two; 10 to 20 minutes at a time, 3 or 4 times a day.
Try dabbing the bruise with some witch hazel.
After the first day or two, try using warm compresses on the bruise 3 or 4 times a day. You could also alternate cool then warm compresses.
If the bruise keeps getting bigger despite the cool compresses or if there is a lot of swelling and pain; then get it checked by a doctor, it might be more than a simple bruise.
Smoking and too much sun exposure will make your skin more likely to break down, and smoking slows down the healing process when you do have a bruise, so try to avoid these things. Make sure that you are eating a balanced diet to help keep your skin healthy.
Mine are from aging thin skin and blood thinner. In time my bruises fade and go away. Mine are caused by bumping something and I also get them if I scrub too hard in the shower.
Sometimes I look and wonder - what did I do?
Abusive type bruises look different. They are black and blue. By abusive - I mean if someone is hitting or man handling a elderly person. That's a no no!

A doctor told me I was deficient in a vitamin or mineral. I wish I could tell you which one, but I can't remember. You should talk to your doctor, he'll do a blood test. It could be that your blood is too thin. It could be a vitamin deficiency. It could be so many things and your doctor won't know until he does a blood test.
