I have to write an argumentative essay about why I don't think golf should be considered a sport. I don't want to make anyone mad, but I need a good counter argument...or why you think it is a sport. I'm not trying to offend anyone and if you make a good point, I might change my mind :) Thanks! :D

Sport: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature

The simplest reason golf is a sport is because there is a ball involved. Every activity where a ball is used, is considered a sport(soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, etc). Other things that make golf a sport is that an object is used to hit the ball(ala baseball and tennis). Like other professional sports, pro golfers are light years better than recreational golfers. Professional golfers are much better than 1 handicap golfers. There are workouts catered to golf. If it wasn't a sport, why is there a workout regimen for it? Other professional athletes love to play golf when they're not participating in their sport. A short list: Tony Romo(Dallas Cowboys), Ray Allen(Boston Celtics), and Albert Pujols(Anaheim Angels). Before I started playing golf, ESPN had there top 50 athletes of all time. They had Jack Nicklaus at #9 on the list and I thought that was way to high for a golfer. As I was starting to play, I had much more respect for Nicklaus' accomplishments. Golf is hard to learn. You have to practice a lot to be very good. It's not just one of those sports that you can stay away from months at a time then one day go out and expect to play well. That won't work. The majority of pros work with teaching professionals and these are the best players in the world. They work on their games all the time. You don't have to be ultra athletic to play golf, but the more athletic you are, the easier you'll pick up the game.
Go swing a club 80+ times and walk 18 holes (4,000+ yards) in the Texas summer and tell me what you think.
What else would you call it?
Ya honestly I would definitely not go with this one, Ive never heard one real argument on how it is not a sport. How can you call anything more of a sport then golf. I have played every sport and now play highschool golf and basketball and when I first started playing golf it was the hardest thing Id ever done ( walking 6 miles in 100 deg weather w/ a 30 pound bag you just want to fall over and die) It is the hardest sport in the world because of how many aspects you go, every shot you have minutes to think about where in other sports its just seconds, which makes it such a mental game. Im still waiting to hear a valid argument to Golf not being a sport. I would call golf a sport way before I call football a sport, and Im not saying football isn't a sport, I've played it half my life, but the physical exertion, technique, skill and overall in golf is just much greater than most sports out there.
requires mental toughness
physical fitness
physical ability
there are different shots, like putting, chipping, lobbing, half shot, bunker shot, low shot high shot, fade, hook, fairway bunker shot. they do require ability each shot is different.
all requires practice and training.
It's challenging, competitive, andvery easy to get angry at.
You probably think golf isnt a sport because its not physical or demands athleticism? It requires more skill than any other sport and the mental side will make you go crazy. Golf is a sport
u need to debate another topic...there is no argument that will declare golf a non sport...Most ppl that say golf isn't a sport don't know or play golf and have the idea of a guy leaping from the foul line slamming and smacking wood as a requirement for a sport...and frankly no really cares if some one thinks golf isn't a sport..u debate relevant issues that have cause for change, not biased Personal opinions that are in the minority
I like to believe that any activity that requires mascular strength, mascular endurance, cardiovascular strength/endurance, and reflex are considered to be a sport. Especially golf, it requires 3/5 out of those categories. This is also ignoring the fact that golf requires thinking (knowing the direction/speed of the wind, which stick to use, tactics) and the trainings necessary to become better.
So yes, golf is a sport.
