Why does my car squeak?
On my 1972 chevelle I recently realized it kinda made a little squeak noise when I kinda rev it a small amount, and also when it idles sometimes, also the red light came on and it says "GEN" it's a red light nest to the right turn signal light, what does GEN mean and what can i do to fix whatever the problem is?!?! I also see that my lights and headlights are like super bright, the are brighter than they were before, My alternator is also a pretty hot, I mean not HOOOTTTT but hot, please help!!!?!??! what does GEN mean also

It sounds like you have a bad voltage regulator and a bad belt.
In older General motors vehicles, the voltage regulator used to be installed on the firewall or on the inside of a fender. General Motors switched to using a regulator inside the alternator around the time you car was built. I am not sure where it is at. I do know you can check it with a voltmeter. With your car running, the alternator output voltage should be between 13.5 and 14.5 volts. If it is higher than that, the regulator is bad.
The belt was probably going bad anyway. What happened is the voltage regulator went bad and as a result it is causing your alternator to run 110%. That is putting a strain on the belt and making it squeak. It is also causing your alternator to run hot.
You should fix this problem soon as over charging will also ruin your battery if it hasn't already.
Gen stands for generator which is another name for alternator, so u said your alternator is hot, i would have it checked out, and for the squeaking it is probably your belt form being loose or maybe slipping, i would inspect the belt for cracks or any signs of damage and replace if damaged also check the tension on it, it may be to tight around the alternator causing the bearings to go bad in the alternator, so check the belt and replace or adjust if need be and also have the alternator tested at auto zone or advanced auto, if its real hot to the touch its not gonna last much longer. hope this helps.
