I have XP Service Pack 1 and want to upgrade to Service Pack 2(I know that Service Pack 3 is out.) Anyway, will that erase my entire system or just update and leave all my files alone? Should I back-up?
Update:Also, will updating the Service Pack make my computer run slower? And can I roll-back to Pack 1 if it does get slower?

It will just upgrade. If will not damage your files too. But in some cases, upon upgrading their is error occur and if your in the middle of updating your service pack, your OS will not boot to windows it will restart and restart. It happen to me, I tried to update my service pack and I've a blue screen. Back up your files to secure it what ever happen to your OS.
It will leave all of your documents alone, in fact it won't remove anything. It is just like the regular updates that windows goes through (just a lot bigger).
You might want to backup, but by no means is it necessary. I would say: if you have the means to back up, then go ahead. If not, then don't go out and buy a new hard drive.
