I can move the shifter pretty easily to Reverse but then sometimes it does not reverse. I have to put it in neutral and then push it back. This morning it backed out of the garage fine. Then down the street to the grocery store and wouldn't back up. Is the transmission going out? Thanks.

NOT SURE HOW TO RESPOND? THE CAR HAS AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

Yes, it sounds like you have a problem with the synchronized trans. Does it work in all other gears cause sometimes reverse is meshed up with another gear like 3rd or 4th ? It is a manuel right cause they don't have check valves !!!
It sounds like you are having a shifter problem. It is somewhat common on those cars. Reverse and 1st gears use the same clutch packs in the trans, with that said, if it was a trans problem you would be having a problem in 1st also. Take it to your local dealer, they know your car better than anyone.
take it to a transmission shop have a diagnostics test run on it, tell them you want a print out of results, if it's an honest shop they will let you see the results before they print it, it sounds as if a check valve is sticking, it will need servicing.
