Just yesterday when I was driving I heard a pop and the air went warm and smelt of burning rubber. Today I tried the air on the lowest setting and it made a loud high pitch noise. Any idea what causes this?

The compressor is probably shot. Trying it more may further damage the belt or send broken compressor bits thru the lines. If it's the original compressor this is probably normal wear, although a blocked TXV could be at fault. A test you could do is to remove the belt and try to spin the compressor by hand, resistance should just be a little more than opening a jar of peanut butter, but yours will probably be near impossible to turn - tell- tale sign of catastrophic internal failure.
The a/c compressor belt could have broken off or one of the a/c pressure lines bursted causing all the freon to leak out, have it checked by a qualified mechanic.
