At maximum speed, an airplane travels 1720 miles against the wind in 5 hours. Flying with the wind, the plane can travel the same distance in 4 hours. What is the speed of the plane with no wind? Thank you!!

AGAINST THE WIND

Speed = x- y mph
SPEED = Distance / time = 1720/5 = 344
x- y = 344 ......(A)
WITH THE WIND
-------------------------
Speed = x + y = 1720/4 = 430
x + y = 430 .........(B)
(A) + (B)
2x = 774
x = 387 mph ANSWER
y = 43 mph ANSWER
Let the speed of the plane in still air be P mph & that of the wind, W mph

5(P-W) = 1720 or P-W = 344 ....... [ I ]
4(P+W) = 1720 or P+W = 430 ......[ II ]
[ I ] + [ II ] gives 2P = 774
P = 387 mph
